I read Dinner in Rome: A History of the World in One Meal by Andreas Viestad while visiting Croatia and Turkey for two weeks. Viestad splits up the meal by component, and several chapters had takeaways:
- Salt: My traveling partner felt very ill after having food poisoning. We walked around London and Chicago on layover flights, but she had little food. As I read through the Salt chapter, Viestad explained how critical salt is for humans. Then, it clicked. My traveling partner was feeling ill from a lack of salt and electrolytes.
- Oil: The ancient romans would discard soiled amphora. We saw discarded amphora while scuba diving off the island of Vís!
- Pepper: We saw spice markets while in Istanbul and picked up some delicious spices and ate excellent food.
- I made pasta carbonara using Croatian cheese and homemade pasta with the flour and eggs in our Airbnb.
